A synthetic tetrapeptide engineered specifically to target the inner mitochondrial membrane, distinguishing it from naturally-derived mitochondrial compounds. It binds directly to cardiolipin, a phospholipid central to mitochondrial structure. What the research explores: cardiolipin stabilization and electron transport chain efficiency, mitochondrial membrane integrity in aging models, and ADP sensitivity in aged mitochondria. Much of the published research focuses on restoring mitochondrial function that has declined with age or cellular stress. What it isn't: a substitute for the foundational cellular processes it studies. SS-31's research base includes Phase II/III clinical trial data in specific disease contexts, but most aging-specific research remains in animal models.
